Healthy Holidays Don't Have to Be Perfect

For many families, August means holidays, day trips, BBQs, eating out, ice creams, later nights and routines that look nothing like they do during the rest of the year.

And that's exactly as it should be.

One of the biggest misconceptions about healthy eating is that you have to choose between enjoying yourself and looking after your health. The truth is, you really don't.

A healthy lifestyle isn't built on one week. It's built on the other fifty-one.

If you're away on holiday, make the most of it. Try the local food. Share dessert. Have the ice cream on the beach. Enjoy the evening meal with your family without feeling guilty.

Food is about much more than calories. It's part of celebrations, culture, memories and spending time with the people we love.

That said, there are a few simple habits that can help you feel your best while you're away.

  • Start the day with a breakfast that includes some protein, such as eggs or Greek yoghurt, to keep you fuller for longer.

  • Keep a bottle of water with you, especially if you're travelling or spending time in the sun.

  • Stay active in ways that don't feel like exercise. Walk along the beach, explore a new town or play games with the children.

  • Eat until you're comfortably full rather than because the food is there.

  • Most importantly, don't think, "I've blown it, so I may as well carry on."

One indulgent meal doesn't undo months of healthy habits, just as one healthy salad doesn't suddenly transform your health.

Whether you're staying at home, taking the children out for the day or heading overseas, remember that healthy living should fit around your life—not stop you from living it.

Enjoy the holiday. Make the memories. Then when normal routine returns, your healthy habits will still be there waiting for you.

Have a wonderful summer.
